For Educational ASL Interpreter Mentors

MN Educational ASL Interpreter Mentor Requirements

  • Minnesota Regional Low Incidence Project logo Must have completed an accredited Interpreter Training Program (ITP)

  • Must be certified with either National Association for the Deaf (NAD) IV or V, American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (ACCI), National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) per Minnesota statute.

  • Must have experience interpreting and have worked in the educational setting (kindergarten through post-secondary education) for a minimum of three (3) years prior to mentoring.

Virtual Round-Table Information Discussions for Mentors of Educational ASL Interpreters

NEW! Region 11 (Metro) will sponsor its first virtual round-table discussions to welcome new mentors of educational ASL interpreters on August 21, September 12, and September 17, 2024.   • Resources for mentoring new interpreters, including Educational Plans
  • Setting up the mentor-mentee relationship at the start of the school year
  • Minnesota's educational ASL interpreter law, including documentation for compliance
  • Navigating the testing options

Region 11 (Metro) Community of Practice for Mentors

The Region 11 Educational ASL Interpreter Mentor Community of Practice is currently composed of mentors in the metro area.

Educational ASL Interpreter Mentor Community of Practice meetings:

  • share updates on current laws and policies related to mentoring new educational ASL interpreters;

  • provide professional training that addresses the challenges in the mentoring process;

  • are a community of support for mentors on best practices in serving non-certified educational ASL interpreters; and

  • plans and coordinates professional workshops offered to educational ASL interpreters across the state of Minnesota.

2024-2025 Region 11 Community of Practice Meeting Dates:

September 26, 2024; November 21, 2024; and February 13, 2025

Housed at BrightWorks, the Judy Wolff Library resources are available September through June for Minnesota Educators and Minnesota residents only. Through a partnership with BrightWorks, the Judy Wolff Library provides special education resources to Minnesota districts, schools, teachers, and parents within Minnesota’s Region 11.
